Matt T is known through out NYC as one of the best Christian Contemporary writers and indie artist. In 2012 He released"I Worship You" with Shabach.tv. The song was released as a video and reached over 3007 views. Although he has a soulful sound you will not be fooled, he definitely has a heart of worship!
We were able to catch up with Matt, lets see what he had to say...
KingdomSoldNYC: "I Worship You" was released 3 years ago, what have you been up to?
Matt T: That time in ministry, that song was released for the purpose of that video- I didn't plan to release new music in that way, I was working on an album. In that time me and my band were doing a lot of live ministry, concerts, services, conferences and things like that. That's where we were and I guess a little while after that, maybe a couple months after I felt God leading me towards a place of kind of like, stop- resting, in a sense. It's a crazy thing, when you have a momentum going and you feel like God is telling you to pause. So I said okay and the way God speaks to me is like He tells me something and then orchestrates it and reveals things that point back to what He is saying. So things would start to happen where we went from ministering every weekend to once a month, so I felt that's where God was leading us. We took a break and in that time there was a lot that I learned.
KingdomSoldNYC: For those who haven't heard you how would you describe yourself as an artist?
Matt T: I would say, I am a worship artist with soulful influences but I like to create music that ushers in Worship. Usually it is in a worship setting like in a church corporate music setting but sometimes its music that makes you want to worship on your way to school, in your car.
KingdomSoldNYC: So everyday worship?
Matt T: Yeah, A friend of mine, Dev coined the name, well I don't know if he coined it but we use the phrase "A Worshiping Artist" It's music that you can listen to on a day to day but most importantly music you can worship to.
KingdomSoldNYC: Have you been working on anything special?
Matt T: I have continued to write, I think first and foremost I am a song writer, So even if I wasn't out ministering or recording music to release I have always been writing. I've been working like that for myself and other artist and very recently this year I've started to take active steps in moving forward. Ministering out a lot more and moving forward with live and recording. I am working on a few projects now and one I am working on and the other is something hopefully that will be live.
KingdomSoldNYC: Okay, that's awesome. I'm sure we will hear more about you and the work your doing. So let's back track a little, You're Matt T, where are you from?
Matt T: NYC, born and raised. My dad is Jamaican, Big up (chuckles) and my mom is Trini. So American with Caribbean heritage.
KingdomSoldNYC: So give us the brief history of Matt T, How did you become a worshiping artist, obviously besides being led by God how did you come to that moment when you realized this is it?
Matt T: Both my parents are heavily involved with music at the church, my mom is one of the worship leaders and my dad was the leader of the band, so it was in the works from before I was born. It started from just being around it, a lot of the influences I have, like right now this is Billy Joel (Listening to the music in the background) artist like Billy Joel, Chicago and more soulful artist that were like BB King my dad would play them around the house. So I grew up listening to soulful influences, pop and then Caribbean Gospel infusion. In Caribbean culture the Caribbean worship experience is different from the Black American. Black American is like Gospel it's the Clark Sisters, Choirs music , Caribbean worship is influenced by Hosanna Music, Hillsong and Integrity Music before what they're doing now like back when Darlene Zschech was like 20 & 30. Songs like Shout to the Lord, we would sing it like every Sunday. Those songs are important because those songs definitely shaped me as a musician, a song writer and as a worshiper. It's about those moments those songs created, like Shout to the Lord the reason we sang it every Sunday was because it got us to the place where our sole focus was on the presence of God. They focused on God 100% and those songs influenced me along with the influences my dad would play and just being in that environment. When I was younger I didn't realize how these things would come together, Singing was a natural talent, my dad had a keyboard which I loved to play and I love poetry. As I got older I realized that these 3 things go together so i truly believe God was orchestrating it for me.
KingdomSoldNYC: So when was that defining moment?
Matt T: So I realized all those influences where meant to come together not until I was literally in my 20's. When I was in my teens I had a group I was in, well I had a couple groups (chuckles). You know when you're younger you see Destiny's Child and Backstreet Boyz your like yo it's so cool. The real group I want to talk about was a group with a bunch of my friends, our name was ["Jezreel"] we were reading the Bible and said that was a cool name lets be called that. So we started with about 8 of us and eventually there were 5. That experience was fun, we were still in school and I have to focus on my studies but I could really do this and if I could do this for real it would be cool. When we all realized we were going in different paths a friend of mine, another member of the group, [B. Cain] told me she was going to start a band and I was helping her out because I felt that's where God is leading me.
KingdomSoldNYC: Did you go to college for anything to do with Music?
Matt T: Yes, I went to Five Towns College. Going to college for music isn't a requirement but it doesn't hurt. I mean it's expensive but you see why your doing what your doing.
KingdomSoldNYC: Where can we keep up with you? We know you have Instagram?
Matt T: Yeah, Instagram, Twitter, Facebook. Like I said I felt released to take active steps so we are working on the website. But its [@PsalmistKing] everywhere basically.
KingdomSoldNYC: We didn't ask if you have anything coming out, but when you do keep us in the loop.
Matt T: You know what? I did a few songs that I did just to do, so I am hoping to create a Soundcloud so people can hear them and it will be free so hopefully people will tune in. Next Saturday, there's Worship in my City. You'll be there so you'll see that. If people want to hear the newer sound of Matt T, that would be the event to come to.
KingdomSoldNYC: Our famous question, Is there anything you want to say, a Shoutout, events or even an encouraging word, a thank you, anything.
Matt T: Well, thank you to you guys for reaching out. Thank you to everyone who supports my ministry and what I do, those who look forward to things. I can't tell you the amount of times, in those 2 years where there was no ministry happening and people have come up to me just been like, bro I appreciate your music, songs like Wisdom's call, Psalms 24 which was like the 1st song I put out in life, for people to be like I love that song, my cousin loves that song. The feedback, one person told me "my friend was in school in Florida and she heard the song and started crying and rededicated her life to God". Stuff like that is what makes me say okay I need to do this. Thank you to everyone who has been vocal about it. even if you haven't been vocal, you've prayed, I really appreciate it. Those who have asked me or pretty much threatened me if I don't put music out. It shows me how much you care and that I'm on your mind for even 5 seconds, I appreciate that. Shout out to my Pastor, [Ernst] Cochy for being supportive and my Life Church Fam. Shout out to my mom, my father, my sisters and brothers. My best friends in the world, My fiance Jan, she's awesome, my sister/booking person/ person who helps me get my life, Noami. My brother Sam Milord and if I've missed anybody oh my gosh I'm sorry, don't hate me. Lastly my statement to whoever is reading this would be to remember to never lose focus. No matter how Christ centered you are, no matter how much you love the Lord, there are times when it' is easy to lose focus. So anyone reading this if your in ministry, or business if you have a dream or goal stay focused on the intention and the promise God gave you and what He gave it to you for and hopefully it will help you be effective. Shout out to The Lord, I should've said that first but honestly thanks be to God, cause these gifts singing, piano and poetry I didn't decide when I wanted to do it, God inspired it and made them come together this way and I am grateful for that!
