KingdomSoldNYC: Kadeem, what inspired that body of work?
Kadeem: Ah, truly the project came out of my life in regards to how I’ve been feeling over the years. I’ve grown up trying to kind of fit in other peoples shoes. A lot of my life has been not knowing who I was, so because that identity was never put in place I tried to find my identity in things, peole and places. When I truly grabbed onto what God had for me and His purpose, I started to see how those areas, those circles and lanes wern’t for me. I started to realize that and started to adapt and say, this is who I am let’s see it. It just became very weird and not on purpose people just started like ‘Uh he’s too different or he’s too crazy’ and this is early in my salvation at like 14,15 where church isn’t cool. I wasn’t a jordan head or a sneaker feen, I wasn’t anything just this weird kid who happened to love Christ. Like the word says, I was kind of separated, ridiculed, I was talked about. Um, The unusual was just a biography of recognizing when I released my idea of what I thought my identity was I found out that my identity was in Christ and that was okay.
KingdomSoldNYC: That’s really powerful. A lot of people unfortunately can’t handle the realization of understandinng that they’re different. They do a lot of different things to try fit in and all these different stuff, but it’s only when we really truly understand that our identity is found in Christ when we feel free to be ourselves and all He wants us to be.
Kadeem: And of course the beginning stages of it were arkward only because when you see the word like “be the light” when everyone else is doing something different- when you live for Christ and your intentional about it...it’s like walking into a dark room and your the only light around. Its apparent, different and difficult for some people. That difficultly for people made it hard for me to kind of hold on and I asked God, "is this really what you have for me? Because i’m getting shunned". Then of course He shows me in his word that He got the same ridicule but His reward was so much greater than the earthly posture. So, I had to really pray a lot and talk to God. Ultimately there was a turn around, there were the benefits of it cause when people where hurting, or having difficulties with things going on or school was ruff they would come to me because I was labeled the "Christian, the church boy". It opened a way for people to actually see the faith made real outside of church. That’s the testimony, it was difficult at first but ultimately I was able to grow into my skin and really, really live for Christ and see the benefits of it. Lives being changed and sometimes I didn’t have to say anything it was just my posture the way I walked and spoke that made a difference.
KingdomSoldNYC: That’s really awesome. My next question is how did you find the recording process and is there anyone you would like to give shout out credits to?
Kadeem: First of all I would like to give a shout out to my sound engineer, Christopher Thompson of SoundMyndMusic. Before I get into that story, the recording process in the beginning you know they usually say your first project you have your whole life to record. The songs I wrote were years in the making, they were real life situations and God inspired music. Because I am a song writter and I also produce the beginning stages of developing the project, I did it on my own. My father kicked me out the house and moved me into the Garage because I was making a lot of noise trying to develop the music. So having my own studio and my own work space, I was able to develop my gift and craft and ultimately come up with this body of work. A lot of the stuff in the project is studio based with live sounds. Then the live sounds come from a some of the great musicians from NYC, timothy walker who plays the drums in the intro track and take control and a bunch of other records.Marco Robinson who plays guitar. He plays the guitar on "Give Me Your Heart" and "All I Need". Travis ferguson who plays lead on take control. I started to team up with people after working with myself for about 5 years developing it. Later on I realized it needed to be pushed further so I reached out to people who I knew where talented, Love God and are passionate about pushing quality faith based music out to the world. The mix and mastering process is where I met Chris and he just really showed me love and helped me balance the music out. The process was hard because the beauty of knowing how to record, write and produce is that you don’t really need anybody because I was able to develop it on my own. Then it became hard because I was the only person in the room to critique myself and my insecurities would show in my sessions “uh this doesnt sound good” “stop it” “don’t do that” it ended up taking longer to release or develop the music the way it needed to sound.
KingdomSoldNYC: Well It’s a great body of work. My track is "Give me your heart”. It is really awesome to see young adults in the Christian community pushing what God has given them. It’s amazing and the success shows. Like yourself for example, you recently stated on your social media account that the Unusual recieved over 500 downloads are those from the USA alone?
Kadeem: No and when I found out it was really a God moment cause I couldn’t marvel on my own success- I don’t know anybody outside the USA. So when I saw the data sheet of the downloads; places like Ghana, Uk, Germany, Australia and the UK many of these places that I’ve never visited before, people I don’t know were downloading the music. The testimony about it is I live in NY and of the 500 downloads only 74 downloads came from NY. Again, I had to sit back and I had to really think, I didn’t do this on my own. People will say to me, you did a great thing and one of the things that I stress is that -this is really God, all I did is put together the music. When I released it my intention was let me put it out and see... if you get it, you get it and if you don’t, you don’t, but just get it out to the masses. That’s the beauty of making it availble I just said God do what you have to do and I released it. The music was like Issac and I was like Abraham, I just had to let it go and I wanted to be obedient. So thank God for that.
KingdomSoldNYC: Is it safe to say, it surpassed what you ever imagined?
Kadeem: Yes, Im going to be very honest, when you release a project in the beginning your like “Yo I want this to reach everywhere” but in the beginning I wasn’t seeing it. So I figured if its singles then thats fine, I’ll do a bunch of shows, I’ll travel and thats fine but I haven’t done that yet. When I look at the data it shows that it’s reaching people without me having to travel to those places and letting them know.
KingdomSoldNYC: Thats quite remarkable, Numbers and data don’t lie. So we thank God for you success. What would you say is next for you?
Kadeem: um, Whats next? I’m featuring on a bunch of projects. Shout out to Th3 Saga, who is a phenominal rapper, He’s saved and he’s in the battle rap arena. God is using him to be a light in that area. Projects, Th3 Saga, Theta, Chris my engineer, I’m doing a lot of features and I am working on new music. You know it doesn’t stop!
KingdomSoldNYC: Where can we keep up with you?
Kadeem: My website www.kadeemnichols.com I try to be everywhere I can, it’s a little hard because iIm not a social media savy person (chuckles) but I try to keep everybody aware of whats going on. I am on Facebook, Kadeem Nichols- Music page is there. Twitter Kadeem_Nichols.Instagram: KadeemNichols. Youtube: KadeemNichols. Instagram- Kadeem Nichols I try to keep the cycle of the same name so it’s easy for people.
KingdomSoldNYC: What about sound cloud?
Kadeem: Sound the same thing. Kadeem Nichols. Those who are apprehensive of downloading the project they can definetly listen to it before they download it. Hopefully they download it anyway because it’s free. You know when people go on the train and give out tracks. Thats what I tried to do with this music, I desired to make it availble to whoever needs it. I believe this generation truly, truly loves music and they desire quality music. So what I wanna do is provide that quality music with the message of Christ embeded in every chord, every song so that it’s planting a seed without them even knowing. I just want it out. Download it. It’s there. If you buy it cool, if you just download it cool too, I want people to have the option so if you don’t know Christ I want you to know the Christ I am talking about in these songs.
KingdomSoldNYC: Anything you would like to share, from new merch to upcoming shows/tours, songs or even just an encouraging word
Kadeem: I think an encouraging word, Be a light. Be yourself, find out who you are in Christ, find out who you are in Him and live that thing out! Jeremiah 29:11 says it best, He knows the plans he has for you. Find those plans out. God leaves a word specifically for his people, so we can start living the way he desires us to live. A lot of us are just aimlessly living not realizing that God left a manual. Some of us we buy merchandise and it comes with a manual and we don’t read it. Years pass without knowing all of the features that we brought. It’s the same thing. Some who are believers they're using half of their knowledge not realizing that if we read the word, there’s is so much more in the faith that we can do. So...read, find out that plan and then live that plan out!
