Consistency is key when you talk about the Chicago Mass Choir. You can imagine the challenges faced in Chicago however this choir exemplifies a positive movement for Christ and change in their communities. Dr. Feranda Williamson, the Chicago Mass Choir President is a great leader who is the key for the continuous upward movement of this ministry.
We had the opportunity to speak with her, let's see what she had to say...
KingdomSoldNYC: As choir/ministry what is the message you try to portray to your audience through all your events?
Dr.Williamson: Well a couple of things. Firstly, we want to encourage and to let everyone know that there is hope regardless of what they’re going through. They can be encouraged to know that is just a test and with every test comes a testimony. Especially what going on in the world today with the violence in the cities and I speak for Chicago and New York. There still is hope, and God continues to answer prayers. We want to uplift and encourage people. They have enough going on to depress and feel sad about. We want to encourage and remind people that there is hope, and the hope is in Jesus Christ!
KingdomSoldNYC: Amen. I agree with that 100 million times! How does it feel to be nominated for two Dove Awards?- Traditional song of the year and traditional album of the year?
Dr.Williamson: It’s just amazing! A humbling experience to be recognized by your peers, and to be among the top gospel artists in the nation! We are the only traditional based choir, in terms of longevity; we’ve been around almost 30 years, and to say that we are still relevant. I’m just humbled and appreciative and above all thankful to God for the recognition!
KingdomSoldNYC: That’s so awesome. You guys are an inspiration, especially to be around for so many years. Especially to be in the city that you are in. I know there some challenges, but you guys trust God in everything that you do. I commend you as the President/ CEO for a job well done.
Dr.Williamson: Thank you! One of the things that I do promote is PRAYER! We have our prayer team that meets every Monday, this group of women are all dedicated and committed to God. They pray for the members, our families, our churches, and our Pastors. Prayer is something that is imperative and we have to focus on our relationship with our SAVIOR. It just so important not only that we pray for ourselves but those who are suffering, those who are ill, going through bereavement and our YOUTH!
KingdomSoldNYC: We are big on youth; we listen to all kinds of gospel music from the old to the modern sound. What we always want to portray is not so boring worshiping God, its fun. They are many different ways to do it. Be a model for youth, relate and understand. As a choir how involved are you in the community?
Dr.Williamson: When we do our community service we enjoy going to the nursing homes, to senior citizens, those who are ill and can’t get out, or those who are in need of a hug. Many of their loved ones are not able to visit regularly. We appreciate that opportunity. As well as giving back to non-profit organizations. Every year we sponsor an annual spring concert and portions of the donations go towards non-profit organizations. This past concert in May of 2016, we gave a donation to the LUPUs Foundation byNorthwestern University.
KingdomSoldNYC: What is the age range for your choir members?
Dr.Williamson: Over 21 and over...we span from the early 20's to the mid-60's!
KingdomSoldNYC: Any Shouts?
Dr.Williamson: We just thank God for the trailblazers who have gone before us...in terms of community choir and gospel music itself. The opportunities that have been given to us. We stand on the shoulders of the pioneers of gospel. Now it’s more mainstream than in prior years and TO GOD BE THE GLORY!
KingdomSoldNYC: Do you have a message for the viewers reading this interview?
Dr.Williamson: We can't be afraid to minister to unbelievers. We need to seek opportunities to go beyond the church; ministry is outside the walls of the church. A person decides to change their life by understanding and realizing Jesus Christ is the Savior.
